Steeel Magnolia and Jack Daniels mark a 220.5 in Friday's Open Derby to tie for the Reserve Spot in the Novice Horse Open Derby.

Building confidence
In a class of over 105 entries, Steeel Magnolia shined bright. The 4 year-old mare by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Million Dollar producer Dun It For Chex laid down a beautiful run with Jack Daniels in the saddle.
"I was happy with how she felt mentally," said Jack. "She came in there a little tight when I walked in, but she really came back to me and the more I went through the pattern with her, the more she relaxed."
The four year old year can be a transformative time for many reining horses, with many trainers regarding it as "the toughest year of training on a horse." This can be because preparing a reining horse's mind to show can be more challenging than teaching the maneuvers themselves.
"...she let me be really gentle with her through the pen. I didn't have to push her hard to get her where I wanted," Jack recalled. "...she turned really good for where she was at that day, and I felt like she gave me a really good effort in the stops."
At the early draw of 28, the run earned a score of 220.5, which was enough to tie for the Reserve Champion spot in the Level 3 Novice Horse Derby and place 3rd in the Level 4 Novice Horse Derby. She earned a check for $2,559.30.
Investing in mare power
Steeel Magnolia is owned by Morgan Reiners and Pond Hill Performance Horses. In 2025, she earned a Level 4 Open Futurity Championship at the Waco Warm Up Series and followed up by marking a 219.5 at the Southwest Reining Futurity. A 217.5 with a lead change penalty in the First Go of the NRHA Futurity kept her from making the finals. For both owners, the end goal with this mare has always been to build a show record and have a valuable broodmare down the road.
Jack discusses the next steps for her; "The next plan is we're going to show her at the 100X (4 year old stakes). We want to put money on her. We're starting to have babies out of her, so we're excited about that."
"Magpie's" first foal is a gray colt by Americasnexttopgun. Both the Morgan's and PHPH are planning to pull embryos on her while she continues showing. Great mares with a strong pedigree are hard to come by. It would seem that Steeel Magnolia is well on her way to fulfilling that promise.
